We had a fun day at camp today! We started out the day painting outside but the rain chased us inside - we played a few games while we waited for the rain to stop. Then the children were introduced to a few other musical pieces including Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf, and Saint-Saens' Carnival of the Animals. We learned how instruments can represent people and animals and tell a story through the music. The kids colored animals and then marched around when they heard their animal's music. It was fun to listen for the different instruments that portrayed the lion, elephant, aquarium, kangaroo, and swan, to name just a few. After coloring rhythm sticks we learned all about rhythm and the kids really seemed to understand it!
We have posted a few excerpts from the Carnival of the Animals and Peter and the Wolf - ask your child if they can remember which animals are being portrayed!
